PC's for Families Program - First Year
Racine, WI
(October 2002 to June 2003)
The PC’s For Families project is directed at reducing
the “digital divide” in Racine County. The “digital divide” describes
the gap between people who have access to technology and those who
don’t. PC’s For Families will strike at the heart of this “divide” by
placing personal computer systems into the homes of qualifying
families. Placing refurbished computers into the homes of families who
don’t have the financial means to purchase a computer will not only
enhance the children’s education but it will also allow the parents to
become part of the “electronic world.” In addition to providing the
families with “new” technology, they will receive basic computer skills
training and technical support for the computer systems.
Through a joint arrangement with Racine Unified School
District's, 21st Century Learning after-school program and Next
Generation Now daycare, this new Tech Partners program will will involve
300 qualifying families receiving computer systems, Internet access and
training.
